We are now trialing lighttpd on port 81. It's faster and uses a lot less ram.

everything else is waiting for me to test. Once every production site has been tested I shall swap lighttpd onto port 80 and apache to port 82 with the intention of removing it. 

Phase 2 will be be the prodding of PHP(and CGIs) to run as different users for each vhost,  plugging the long-standing trust issue and security hole.
